Auto History : First Cars in the Market

Fiat 1903
As we have seen in the previous article, inventors from the United States and Europe began making important steps in the development of a practical vehicle. Within a few years, hundreds of technologies were being develop all over the world. The goal was now to start making making more vehicles and convincing people to buy them, which we can say with certainty was not an easy task.

The four main countries that were at the forefront of this technological development were Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Let's take a look at some of the models:

  • Clement 7HP 1901 - Developed by Adolphe Clement, who became rich by selling bicycles and tires, the Clement 7HP 1901 featured a front-mounted engine (a 7hp one-cylinder). The top speed of this vehicle was 25mph.
  • Mercedes 60HP 1903 - Mercedes was a brand name of the Damlier Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) company. It is interesting to know that while other car manufacturers were busy developing vehicles that could reach speeds of 30mph, DMG was manufacturing fine machines like the Mercedes 60HP, with not just 60HP but speeds of up to 70mph.
  • Renault Volturette 1898 - Created in France, this single cylinder vehicle could reach 20 miles per hour.
  • Ford Model A 1903 - Spending almost all its initial investment, the Ford Model A 1903 was a success. It was able to reach a speed of 28 miles per hour.
  • Fiat 1903 - The Italian Fiat of 1903 featured a front-mounted engine with four cylinders. The engine was also water cooled. It reached speeds of 44mph and had a maximum of 24HP.
Indeed, the race for speed and better car technology had started. Human innovation saw another field to perfect.
