Auto History: Pioneer Vehicles

This article sets forward the AIO Team's new year resolution of covering auto history, from head to toes. The automobile is a great machine and its beginnings are not a bit less great. So, let's get started with the pioneer vehicles.

Without a doubt, the 19th century was a time of great technological advancements.  This is the time period where mechanization transformed productions in factories. For example, in 1810, machinery was developed to make nails. In 1890, machinery to manufacture was developed, replacing highly paid glass blowers.

Slowly, inventors turned their attention to anything that could be improved with machines. Some inventors, for instance, began to look into replacing the horse with something that could go faster and farther. In order to do so, electricity was used, and so was steam.

Here are some pioneer vehicles that were developed:

  • Granville Steam Carriage 1880
    • This pioneer vehicle used a vertical steam boiler, reached speeds of 20mph. It was developed by a Railway Engineer, Robert Neville in the UK.
  • Daimler 1886
    • This German vehicle used a gas engine and reached 10 mph. It was developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. They, in simple terms, fitted their engine into a stagecoach.
  • Daimler Cannstatt 4HP 1898
    • Using a two cylinder engine, Gottlieb Daimler developed this vehicle at Cannstatt, Stuttgart, with a maximum speed of 16mph.
  • Stanley Runabout 1898
    • Developed by two US brothers, this vehicle was based on a steam engine and reached 35 miles per hour.
  • Columbia Electric 1899
    • Developed by Columbia Automobile Company, the Columbia Electric used a single electric motor and could reach speeds of 15mph. The vehicle was smooth and silent.
  • Goddu Tandem 1897
    • A two cylinder vehicle developed by Louis Goddu, the Tandem could reach speeds of up to 30mph.
  • Benz 1885
    • Developed by Karl Benz in Germany,  the Benz Moterwagen could reach speends of 6mph using a single cylinder and pioneering technologies such as four-stroke engine.
Human innovation is indeed amazing. And car history is proof of this.
