Japanese Contribution To Automotive World in Past History

Automobiles first began appearing in Japan in the early 1900s. About this same time a technician named Komanosuke Uchiyama, who at the time was employed at a bicycle dealership, began working on the preliminary designs for Japans first automobile.

Uchiyama successfully produced two automobiles. The first was a gasoline powered engine.

In 1904 a man named Torao Yamaha created the first domestic bus, which was capable of transporting up to 10 passengers. Just three short years later Uchiyama created the Takuri, the first official Japanese made car.

Between the years from 1914 to 1917 Kaishinsha Motor Works in Tokyo began importing, assembling and selling British car, but also manufactured its own two-cylinder Japanese cars called the Dattogo. The Kaishinsha Motor Company was the first successful automobile manufacturing business to fully operate in Japan.

The first Mitsubishi Zoshen also came about during this time, the 22 Mitsubishi Model As, which was among the first mass produced cars manufactured in Japan. Up until about 1914 the automobile industry in Japan had a very minor stronghold in the industry.

The Military’s Role In Auto History In Japan

Transportation became a much bigger need in Japan following the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 where the military became interested in automobiles to carry military personnel and armor from Germany to France. The first domestic military truck was produced under order of the Japanese Military Defense Agency and made at the Osaka Artillery Factor in May of 1911.

Following this the military was able to grant subsidies to auto manufacturers so that autos could be created for civilians during times of peace to be converted to war vehicles during war in the event they were needed. This was among the first military auto policy.

A major earthquake in 1923 created a need for a massive amount of automobiles. Following this many Model T’s were imported. General Motors established GM Japan at this time, as Ford also set up shop.

It wasn’t until the 50s and 60s that domestic companies began taking off in Japan, due to technology stimulating policies within the country began stimulating growth within. Prior to this wars, political conflict and other agendas prevented Japan from seeing the same early growth that Ford originally saw in the U.S. in the automobile industry. Today however, Japan is now the second largest automobile manufacturer in the world, making just under 10 million autos each year.

American Contributions In Automotive Past History

Perhaps the most famous contributor to the automobile campaign throughout the world, or at the very least one of the most well-known contributors to the automobile world is that of Henry Ford. Mr. Ford was not responsible for inventing automobiles, although some may have you think so. Rather, what Henry Ford did was to produce an automobile that was economical, and easily within the grasp of the ordinary American consumer.

For most people, buying an automobile was not something that was affordable during the time the first automobiles were manufacturers. Henry Ford set out to make an automobile something more than a toy for rich folk.

Creating More Than Luxury Automobiles

Mr. Ford developed a method of manufacturing automobiles that reduced the cost of his Model T, which involved assembly line automobile manufacturing. This not only changed the way that automobiles were made, but also changed the way American products were made generally, and globally impacted the world.

Assembly manufacturing has now become a mainstay in most parts of the world. For motor cars made their first appearance in the automobile market in 1908. During this time the Model T sold for a little over $800.00. Today at that price, buying an automobile may seem like the most inexpensive item one could possibly purchase to improve one’s lifestyle.

Later the price dropped by several hundred dollars. Ford held a large percentage, nearly half of the entire automobile market by 1914.

Assembly Line Automobile Manufacturing

Like the automobile, Ford was not responsible for inventing the idea of the assembly line automobile process, rather he bettered the process. He reduced the time it took to assemble his Model T cars from over twelve hours each day to less than six hours, which is less than an ordinary work day.

This resulted in massive manufacturing at cheap prices, which resulted in huge profits and a wildly popular product at the time.

English Contributions To The Automotive World In Past History

The automobile owes a great deal to the English, who made substantial contributions to its overall design and functionality throughout history. Among the first English gents to invest in the automobile was a man by the name of Thomas Savery, who in 1698 creative a basic steam engine from French scientist Denis Papin’s version of a pressure cooker digester which powered moving pistons over repeated cycles.

This basic steam engine could pump water out of flooded mine-shafts. While not used in automobiles specifically, it lead Thomas Newcomen in 1712, another Englishman to patent a design on what he called the “Atmospheric Steam Engine,” something he worked with along with John Calley to also pump water out of mines.

Back in the day, it was more important to remove water from mines than to get around town in a fancy car.

James Watt, repairing one of these Newcomen engines in 1765, improved on the efficiency of the engine, helping to lay the foundation for what became a self-propelled steam engine in the late 60s. It wasn’t until the mid to late 1780s that the first steam engine for powering carriages and carts came from these early English designs.

In 1801 a Mr. Richard Trevithick created a successful motor vehicle engine, driving in through Camborne, Cornwall, but unfortunately Mr. Trevithick’s unique motor car was destroyed in an unexpected fire. Just two years later Mr. Trevithick designed a second steam-powered carriage which he drove through the streets of London. This vehicle caused a lot of commotion however, much like his first attempt at motor-powering a vehicle.

Even More English Ingenuity

In 1826, not to be outdone by his predecessors, one Mr. Samuel Brown created a newly designed gas and vacuum engine that consisted of two cylinders powered from a rocking beam, capable of generating up to 4hp. This was soon followed by the London and Bath steam coach offering round rip service from London to Bath. The first coach service was plagued by ups and downs, but offered passengers the first opportunity for a long distance coach ride powered by something other than horses.

As we can see, many Englishman were heavily involved in the earliest use of steam and alternatively powered engines, consistently working to find tune the engine. It would take many years before the first modern internal combustion engines would enter the scene and change automobile making history in London and throughout the world.

German Contributions to Automotive World in Past History

The automobile owes a lot to Germany. In fact the automobile was first invented in Germany by a man named Karl Benz. The automobile gained a little power when Nikolaus Otto, also from Germany, later developed the four-stroke internal combustion engine. This invention helped burn fuel into a piston chamber; his concept of a four strokes and compression of the fuel mixture before ignition had been invented earlier and patented by another individual, but Nikolaus was the first to make this concept usable and practical. This first development by Otto began as a stationary engine, which later was adapted to become the automobile engine, involving the downward intake stroke, where a coal-gas combination mixed with air enters a piston chamber, followed by an upward compression stroke where the piston compresses the mixture, then a downward power stroke which ignites the fuel combination and an upward exhaust which releases the gas buildup from the piston mixture.
These early inventions are not what made Germany famous however.

High Performance Sports Vehicles

Germany is most famous for the development of high performance, high quality sports vehicles. These include vehicles like the Porsche, whose headquarters are located in Zuffenhausen, Stuutgart and Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
Other popular high-quality cars include the Mercedes-Benz, which are famous for their quality and safety as well as technological innovation. The Mercedes-Benz company was first created from the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft company, created in 1926. This company bought the American company Chrysler.

Even More Famous German Contributions

Why are high performance vehicles so popular? Perhaps because they lend an air of prestige, perhaps stature. One of the most infamous of German Car Companies is the VW or Volkswagen, a car with a distinctive personality because of its many different outstanding shapes and sizes. Most famous of all is the beetle designed VW, which was created as an economically designed car for the people, with an engine placed in the rear of the car. The car, initially designed on order by Adolf Hitler, was one of many produced by the German carmaker who produced some of the most and most notable cars in history. In fact, VW is and remains one of the largest automobile companies even today.
