The History Behind Mercedes

Many believe that the History of Mercedes is in a way the history of the automobile; and these individuals would not be wrong. The two German engineers behind this name, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, were the pioneers of the internal combustion engine and the automobile.  They came together, forced by circumstances, to then engineer the most advanced vehicles of their time.

The story begins with Gottlieb Daimler building the world's first light gas engine in 1883. This first engine was used to create the very first and very primitive motorcycle. During the same time, Karl Benz was experimenting too with internal combustion engines and in 1886 developed a three-wheeler automobile.  By the 1900s, the Daimler Motor Company was founded and soon after the Daimler 35hp was introduced. In fact, it is thanks to the Daimler 35hp that the Mercedes name was developed when an Autro-Hungarian entrepreneur ordered 36 cars and renamed the cars ordered Mercedes after his 11-year-old daughter. It seems the name was of Daimler's liking. 

In 1903, the Mercedes 60HP was developed. It is interesting to note that while other companies were still trying to create a stable vehicle that could move at speeds faster than 30mph, Mercedes was developing faster and finer machines.

In that years that followed, Mercedes and Benz continued working hard, developing new and better technologies. During World War I, both companies worked engineering an array of military vehicles and both had forged reputations for high-quality German engineering.

But, we usually hear about Mercedes and Benz together, as in Mercedes-Benz; how did this happen? As a result of the recession that hit Germany during the 1920s, many firms were forced into joint ventures to survive. Thus, in 1926, Daimler and Benz merged together and became the Daimler-Benz AG, branding their cars under the Mercedes-Benz.
