Car History: Increasing Production, Part 1

Ford Model T Tourer 1908

Not long after the first cars for customers were developed, car makers realized that these machines were here to stay. New goals were on the horizon, with these manufacturers looking for ways to increase production, develop more efficient machines, and make their vehicles more affordable for the average citizen. Here are three of the early production-line cars available:

1) Oldsmobile Cruved Dash 1901 - The Oldsmobile Curved Dash of 1901 had its origin in the United States. The engine consisted of one cylinder and it could reach speeds of approximately 20 miles per hour. Developed by Ransom Eli Olds, the Curved Dash was the first mass-produced low-price in America and in the whole world. In 1904, for instance, over 5000 units were sold. This puts Olds as teh first person to use the assembly line in the automotive industry, the second being Henry Ford.

2) Cadillac Model A 1903 - The Cadillac Model A was developed Cadillac Automobile Company from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company after Henry Ford himself had a dispute with his financial backers. The Model A operated on a single cylinder and could reach speeds of 25mph. Indeed, it was a simple, well-engineered small car.

3) Ford Model T Tourer 1908 - The Ford Model T of 1908 originated in 1908 by Henry Ford. It was born out of Ford's dream of manufacturing a car which anyone could afford to buy. By using a moving assembly line, Henry ford was able to produce the reliable and low cost Model T, which was based on a straight-four engine and was able to reach up to 42mph.
