Ford's Model T

Henry Ford's dream was to develop a car that the average American could afford and operate. The Ford Model T, affectionately called the "Tin Lizzie", was the car Henry Ford had dreamed of.

Such was the success of the Model T that more than 15 million of them were made from 1908 until 1927. In fact, by 1918, the Model T accounted for half of the cars in the United States.

Significance of the Ford Model T

The Ford Model T played a huge role in the history of the automobile. It was not only the first affordable automobile. It was also the first car that introduced assembly line production techniques to car manufacturing in the United States.

Indeed, through the use of a moving assembly line, production hit 1000 cars per day in 1914 and by 1923, more than 2,000,000 Model T's were being produced. It is no coincidence that the Model T was named the world's most influential car of the 20th century in an international post.

Innovations of the Ford Model T

The Model T introduced several car manufacturing innovations. One such innovation was the monobloc engine, that is, an internal combustion engine where some of the major components are formed as a single integral unit, usually by casting. The Model T also pioneered the use of light-but-tough vanadium steel.

Indeed, the Ford Model T was the beginning of something larger in the era of car manufacturing and motorization.
