Austin Sevens

As we have seen in previous posts, the 1920's was a time where manufacturers developed cars for the very wealthy, the actors and actresses, the elite. It was also a time where manufacturers also developed cars for the racing track and while doing so, tested and refined a wide array of new car technologies. We also saw the rise of cars for the middle class, such as the Fold Model A tourner 1927.

Auto dealerships began popping out across the nation. Their target was the middle class and for such, they develop smaller cars too. Of of such small cars was the Austin Sevens, develop by Hebert Austin in the United Kingdom. The Austin company had been building cars before the production of the Austin Sevens, but there cars were mostly large cars.

However in 1920, Hebert Austin began working on the concept of a smaller car. The idea was to meet the needs of young families who wanted an affordable car. With the help of Stanley Edge, an 18 year-old draftsman, Austin's dream car came to live. The car was very small, featured a front-mounted four cylinder engine and four-wheel brakes. But despite it's small size, the Austin Seven sold more than 290,000 units in the seventeen years it was manufactured.
