The History of Renault

The history of Renault begins with Louis Renault, a talented young engineer. Louis was fascinated by engineering and mechanics since an early age. While his family owned and operated a textile fabric, Louis decided to embark on a different path. By 1898, Louis had built his first car, a "quadricycle."

Shortly after he created his vehicle, Louis realized the potential and partnered up with his two brothers, who had honed their business skills. Together, they set up Societe Renault Freres in 1988. Now, the way the Renault brothers were able to grew the popularity of their enterprise was through involvement in racing.

By 1918, Renault produced not only family cars but also commercial vehicles, including taxis and trucks and tanks for the French Army during the War. During World War II, Renault decided to keep his car factory opened thinking the war would not last long. Unfortunately, the German army took control of Renault's factory and used it for their own advantage. As a result, when Paris was liberated and the War did come to an end, Renault was arrested under the charges of having helped the Nazis.
