About General Motors

The General Motors company is an American Corporation. Until 2008, General Motors was the world's largest motor vehicle manufacturer, a status that GM had maintained since n over took GM to become the World's largest motor vehicle manufacturer in the world.

General Motors Company was founded in 1908 and it brought together, by consolidation, several companies, including Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Ewing, and what would alter become Pontiac. The original president of GMC was William C. Durant but was forced out of the comapny in 1920. The next president then was Alfred Sloan, who reorganized all of the companies that formed part of GMC. Sloan created five main automotive divisions: Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick. Through Sloan efforts, GM's sales organization was strengthened greatly and the idea of annual style changes was pioneered.

Such was the growth of General Motors that it overtook in Ford Motor Company and became the leading American passenger car manufacturer. And by 1941, General Motors was one of the largest industrial corporations in the world, making more than 40% of all the cars in the US.

General Motors continued to grow until the middle 1980s However, around this time the company also began to have more competition from Japanese automakers. And in the next decades that followed GM's financial problems began to grow until was foced into bankruptcy in June 2009. One month later, General Motors emerged from bankruptcy with reorganization.
